Beloved by audiences in more than 70 countries, this seminal British television series is just as enjoyable now as when it first aired in the mid-1970s. Richard, his new wife Virginia, and recently widowed son James comprise the aristocratic Bellamy family who resides upstairs while their loyal servants maintain the London household from downstairs. These final 16 episodes cover the swinging ’20s to the stock market crash (1919-30). The episodes of the fifth season are more self-contained than other seasons’ and every bit as entertaining.

The household mood reflects the events of the day–jubilation at the armistice, a fancy-dress party amidst the gaiety of the early ’20s, divided allegiances during the general strike of 1926, the fever of stock market wealth, and overnight ruin in October 1929. James, with too much time and money on his hands, is single again and up to his usual antics. Nor is life dull for the other members of the household–Hudson almost resigns his position after he’s caught holding hands with Lily, the housemaid, and Georgina winds up in court after she hits and kills a man while taking a group of irresponsible socialites to Sussex in the Bellamys’ Rolls. While James and Richard focus their political activities outside the home, Edward and Frederick vie to see who will fill in for Hudson while he recuperates from his heart attack. Finally, after the market crash and James’s subsequent death, the family is forced to sell 165 Eaton Place to pay off his creditors. The series ends with Rose locking up the empty house, closing the door on one of TV’s most popular and acclaimed shows. Whether you first met the Bellamys and their delightfully enjoyable downstairs entourage in the 1970s or are just getting to know them now, the superb acting and compelling character development will always be the real reason to watch Upstairs Downstairs. –Tara Chace

As time-travel adventures go, this 1983 outing is an enjoyable one: a loosey-goosey shaggy-dog story about an ’80s kind of guy who gets tossed back to the ’70s–the 1870s, that is. Fred Ward plays the hero, a motocross racer who, along with his motorcycle, accidentally rides into the middle of a science experiment and is transported to the Old West. There, he runs into a cast of bad guys that includes some of the best character actors of the period: L.Q. Jones, Tracey Walter, Richard Masur, Ed Lauter, and Peter Coyote. It’s your classic fish-out-of-water setup, with Ward as the slightly dippy wise guy who startles the heck out of the cowboys and pioneers of the period with his motorized bike, until he runs out of gas. The movie runs out of fuel as well, but it’s an enjoyable ride while it lasts. Notable for its coproducer and cowriter: Michael Nesmith, formerly of the Monkees. –Marshall Fine

Keanu Reeves (The Matrix) and Alex Winter (The Lost Boys) deliver “spirited performances” (The Hollywood Reporter) in the original righteous comedy about the two ditzy dudes from San Dimas, California. Also starring George Carlin, this hysterically funny historical comedy is a “snappily directed” (Time), “bouncy good time” (The Boston Globe) and a party that goes on and on! Bill (Winter) and Ted (Reeves) have spent so much time forming their rock band, The Wyld Stallyns, that they’re flunking history. Whoa, duuuude! And when Ted’s dad threatens to send him away to military school, Bill and Ted realize it could mean the most heinous end of The Stallyns! Luckily, a guardian angel from the future, Rufus (Carlin), has come to them with a most bodacious solution: a time-traversing phone booth to take them into the past to learn about the world from some of history’s most influential personalities. Their journey through time turns out to be a blastÂ…but will they learn enough to pass their class?

Hollow Man - The Director’s Cut [Blu-ray] Unbiased Review

Watch to watch Hollow Man - The Director’s Cut [Blu-ray] online?

Check out this trailer first:

So what’s Hollow Man - The Director’s Cut [Blu-ray] all about?

In Paul Verhoeven’s appropriately shallow Hollow Man, Kevin Bacon plays a bad-boy egotistical scientist who heads up a double-secret government team experimenting with turning life-forms invisible. How do we know he’s a bad boy? Because he (a) wears a leather overcoat, (b) compares himself to God, (c) drives a sports car, and (d) spies on his comely next-door neighbor while eating Twinkies. Sadly, this is the most character development anyone gets in this undernourished action/sci-fi thriller, which boasts some amazing special effects and some amazingly ridiculous plot twists. After experimenting rather ruthlessly on a menagerie of lab animals, Bacon finally cracks the code that will turn the invisible gorillas, dogs, and so on, back into their visible forms. Does it work on humans? Faster than you can say “six degrees,” Mr. Bacon appoints himself human guinea pig, strapping down for an injection of fluorescent-colored serum. Thanks to some phenomenal, seamless and Oscar-worthy computer effects, Bacon is indeed rendered invisible, organ by organ, vein by vein. And what’s the first thing you’d do if you were invisible? Why, spy on your female coworkers in the bathroom and molest your comely next-door neighbor, of course! Soon, Bacon is thoroughly psychotic, and it’s up to Elisabeth Shue (Bacon’s coworker and ex-girlfriend) and hunky Josh Brolin (her current snuggle bunny) to defeat the invisible man, who’s picking off the science team one by one. You’d think this would be a prime opportunity for copious amounts of cheesy sex and aggressive violence–which Verhoeven served up so well and so exuberantly in Starship Troopers and Basic Instinct–but if anything, the director seems to tone down the proceedings, and really, who wants a muted Paul Verhoeven movie? Shue (who got top billing and a bad haircut to boot) and Brolin (who, yes, does take off his shirt at least once) generate little heat, and while Bacon does give an effective, primarily voice-oriented performance, his character is so underdeveloped that, well, you can see right through him. –Mark Englehart
